At their second annual Snapdragon Technology Summit in Hawaii today, Qualcomm officially announced the Snapdragon 845 processor for mobile devices will be coming to market in 2018. This, along with a move into the mobile PC market, comes amidst attempts by Broadcom to take over Qualcomm. Although Qualcomm announced the new Snapdragon 845 today, full details on features and specifications will not be released until tomorrow.
Along with making the Snapdragon 845 official, Qualcomm also announced that Samsung would be the foundry for production of the new chips. That close tie with Samsung likely means the odds are good the Samsung Galaxy S9 will be released with the new Snapdragon 845 in some markets like the U.S.
One flagship that will definitely be getting the Snapdragon 845 in 2018 will be the next such device from Xiaomi. Lei Jun, CEO for Xiaomi, appeared on stage with Qualcomm's Cristiano Amon to announce that Xiaomi would use the Snapdragon 845 for their next flagship as part of a “commitment to the China ecosystem.” Lei said he was glad to
“reaffirm that Xiaomi's close relationship with Qualcomm Technologies in the premium tier will continue into 2018. Xiaomi is committed to making devices that combine cutting-edge innovations in technology and beautiful design, while defying price expectations, and we have chosen Snapdragon 845 to power our next flagship smartphone.”
Check back tomorrow for more details on the Snapdragon 845 and what benefits it may be bringing to the smartphone market in 2018.
